Hardwood Refinishing Mistakes to Avoid

Common Causes of Hardwood Floor Damage and What to Do

Hardwood flooring is much coveted due to its long-lasting appeal and durability. However, problems can occur over time that will damage even the strongest of hardwoods. More often than not, hardwood refinishing can resolve most damage, however, there are others where the only option will be to replace the floor entirely. Taking time to learn what types of damage hardwood flooring can sustain, and what you can do to resolve the problem is a must.

Buckling and Crowning

Also known as cupping and crowning, this is when hardwood responds to moisture absorption. Hardwood planks are like plate tectonics. They will sit on the surface of the subfloor and line up next to one another. However, when a plank is exposed to moisture, it will soak it up like a sponge and push out in a concave manner. This is what is known as crowning. As the planks press against one another will result in others buckle in a convex manner, which results in cupping.

Fading

Very few people think that the UV rays from the sun can do any damage to hardwood floors. Sadly, that is not the case. UV rays can result in fading in areas that are regularly exposed to sunlight. This can cause patchy colors and in some cases, very distinct differences in color. It can get so bad that when you go to move furniture you will see defined lines from where the sun did not get to the hardwoods. Hardwood refinishing can help to resolve this problem, as can applying a UV protectant during the refinish process to reduce fading. To help subvert this problem, keep your blinds or curtains closed when you are not at home.
