Myths About Hardwood Floor Sanding
As a flooring contractor, we’ve spoken to many homeowners who are thinking of having their floors sanded. Through our conversations, we’ve learned that a lot of people believe in floor sanding “facts” that are actually quite untrue! Here are some of the hardwood floor sanding myths that we’ve discovered:
Myth #1: Floor sanding is simply that — sanding floors.
It’s easy to believe that floor sanding is simply about sanding hardwood floorboards. However, it’s more than just that! Before sanding your floors, a professional floor contractor will drive finish nails at the wood level, replace broken floorboards, and fill holes and dents with wood filler. They’ll proceed with sanding only when these tasks have been completed. After the sanding process, your contractor will apply the stain of your choice and ensure your flooring is properly sealed against moisture damage.
Myth #2: You can’t sand floors if their nail heads are visible.
Hardwood flooring can only be sanded a certain number of times in its lifetime. Once its wear layer has been sanded off, you can no longer sand it; otherwise, you’ll risk damaging your floorboards and even your subflooring. One way to know if your floor’s wear layer is nearly gone is checking for visible nail heads.
However, just because you can see nail heads doesn’t mean your floor can’t be sanded! Remember: a weak underlayment, as well as poor flooring installation, can cause your floor to move and push nails upward, making them more visible. Dishonest contractors will take advantage of this to convince you to completely replace your flooring, which will result in more profits for them. So, to avoid getting duped into replacing perfectly good floors, ask your contractor for more proof that your floors can no longer be sanded.
Myth #3: Hardwood floors should be refinished every now and then.
As long as you use high-quality finishes, your floor can last up to seven to 10 years without needing another sanding session. Be wary of contractors that will tell you that you need to refinish your flooring every two to three years; they’re probably trying to trick you into spending more money than necessary!
